How to create a workspace?

Last updated: June 13, 2025

Workspaces are your personal development environments in Codesphere, where your code lives and your applications come to life. Creating a new workspace is a straightforward process. This guide will walk you through each step, from choosing a starting point to configuring your resources.

Before you start: Ensure you are logged into your Codesphere account.

Step 1: Navigate to workspaces and initiate creation

  1. From your main Codesphere dashboard (usually accessible via codesphere.com/ide/teams/.../workspaces), you'll see a list of your existing workspaces, if any.

  2. Locate and click the purple "+ New workspace" button, found in the top right corner of the page.

Step 2: Choose your starting point

After clicking "+ New workspace," a "Create workspace" modal will appear, offering several ways to begin:

  • From a Git repository:

    • Search or paste URL: You can directly paste a public Git repository URL into the search bar at the top.

    • Connect provider: Click on "Connect Github," "Connect Bitbucket," or "Connect Gitlab" to link your version control provider and select a repository. This allows Codesphere to also clone your private repositories.

  • From a template:

    • Codesphere provides a variety of pre-configured templates to get you started quickly. Examples include:

      • Static landing page with Express.js & TailwindCSS

      • Roadmap with Next.js

      • Hello, SQLite!

      • Hello, React!

      • Hello, Python!

      • Trading Bot

      • Wordpress

      • Hello, Java Spring Boot

    • You can scroll through the list or click "Browse more" (if available) to see all options.

  • Create an empty workspace:

    • Select the "+ Create an empty workspace" option if you want to start from scratch without any pre-filled code or specific framework setup.

Step 3: Configure your workspace

Once you've chosen your starting point (e.g., selected a template like "Wordpress" or connected a Git repository), you'll proceed to configure your workspace settings:

  1. Template (Confirmation): If you selected a template, it will usually be pre-filled here. You might be able to change it using the dropdown if needed.

  2. Workspace name: Enter a descriptive name for your workspace. This will help you identify it later.

  3. Base image: Select the operating system environment for your workspace. For example, "Ubuntu 24.04" might be selected by default. Choose the image that best suits your project's needs from the dropdown.

  4. Deployment mode:

    • Off when unused (Recommended for cost savings): Your workspace will automatically shut down after a period of inactivity to save resources and costs. It will restart when you access it again.

    • Always on: Your workspace will remain running continuously, ensuring immediate availability but potentially incurring higher costs.

  5. Access to Codesphere uri: This toggle (usually on by default) determines if your workspace will be accessible via a unique Codesphere URL once deployed.

  6. Select a plan/resource tier: Codesphere offers various plans with different resource allocations and pricing:

    • Micro, Boost, Pro: Offer increasing levels of vCPUs, Memory, and Storage for more demanding applications.

    • T4 GPU, A100 GPU: Specialized plans for GPU-intensive tasks like machine learning.

    • Click on your desired plan. The default selection might be "Micro."

  7. Customize resources (vCPUs, memory, storage): Based on the selected plan, you'll see the allocated vCPUs, Memory, and Storage. Some plans might allow further customization of these resources within certain limits.

    • Configure Replicas: A replica is an instance of your workspace. Running multiple replicas can improve performance and availability.

    • The default is usually 1 replica. You can adjust the number using the + or - buttons or by typing in the input field. The associated cost per month will update accordingly.

Step 4: Review billing information and create

  1. Prorated billing: Take note of the prorated billing information. Codesphere bills you only for the time you use your workspace. If you cancel during the month, you'll only be charged for the usage up to that point.

  2. Review total cost: The estimated monthly cost based on your selected plan and number of replicas will be displayed (e.g., "$5/m" for 1 Micro replica).

  3. Create workspace: If you're satisfied with your configuration, click the purple "Create" button at the bottom of the modal.

  4. Go back: If you need to make any changes to the previous step (choosing a template or Git repo), you can click the "< Back" button.

Step 5: Accessing your new workspace

After clicking "Create":

  • You will typically be redirected to your newly created workspace.

  • Codesphere will begin provisioning and setting up your environment. This might involve cloning your repository (if selected), setting up the base image, and installing any template dependencies.

  • Once ready, you can start coding in the integrated IDE, manage your files, and deploy your application.

Congratulations! You've successfully created a new workspace in Codesphere. You're now ready to start building, deploying, and managing your applications with ease. Explore the features of your workspace and consult our other knowledge base articles for more specific guides.
