How to edit & manage your code?

Last updated: June 13, 2025

The Codesphere IDE provides a seamless experience for the entire development lifecycle, from writing your first line of code to versioning your work with Git. This guide covers the fundamental workflow for editing and managing your project files.

Editing your code

The core of your development work happens within the filetree and the editor.

  1. Finding and opening files: To begin, navigate to the Files tab in the sidebar on the left. This will display your project's complete filetree. You can expand folders and double-click on any file to open it in the central Editor panel.

  2. Writing and modifying code: The Editor is where you will write and modify your code. It provides full syntax highlighting and supports multiple tabs, so you can work on several files at once. You can use the rich set of keyboard shortcuts to speed up your work, such as moving lines of code, auto-indenting, and commenting.

Managing your work with Git

Every Codesphere workspace is a Git repository. This allows you to track every change you make and maintain a clean version history for your project.

  1. Viewing changes: After editing and saving your files, click on the Git tab in the sidebar. This view shows you all the files that have been modified, added, or deleted since your last commit, listed under "Changes".

  2. Committing your changes: Saving a snapshot of your work is called a "commit".

    • In the text box at the top of the Git panel, write a clear and descriptive commit message that summarizes the changes you made.

    • Click the "Commit" button to save this version to your project's local history.

  3. Pushing to a remote repository: After committing your changes, you can share them with your team by "pushing" them to a remote repository (like GitHub or GitLab). Use the Push button located in the top bar of the IDE to sync your commits.
